I received an e-mail via the blog asking about countries that are open to singles. I know I have done a previous post on this, but thought I would bring it up again as there seem to be myths regarding single women and domestic adoption.
I am not certain of all the countries still open to singles....I cannot keep up. But- I do know that before I adopted, I had no idea that domestic adoption was a possibility. I waited for an international adoption for over 2 years before looking into it. Anyway, in terms of choosing where to adopt, it's a very personal decision. But, there are many advantages to domestic adoption including:
1. If you are open to race and gender & are with the right agency, you can get a referral pretty quickly. I have had friends adopt within 2-3 weeks after completing paperwork.
2. Depending on what state you live in, you may not have to travel to meet your child. Adoption is expensive and travel expenses add quite a bit, particularly international travel.
3. Domestic adoption typically means you are able to get an infant vs. a child who may be older or spent time in a orphanage/foster home.
Overall, I would still be open to adopting internationally and if that is where your heart is, go for it. Just know there are lots of kids here in the US who are available for single women.
